RECYC-FRIGO is a Hydro-Québec program that targets the recovery and recycling of 300000 energy-guzzling appliances that are over ten years old. By the time it ends, the program will have generated energy savings of over 180 million kilowatt hours (kWh). That’s equivalent to the annual household energy consumption of a city like Sept-Iles! Every recovered appliance is dismantled and 95% of its material is recycled. Two years after the program’s launch, over 14000 tonnes of residual material have been recovered through the recycling of old appliances. This represents a decrease of 359000 tonnes of green house gas emissions, which is equivalent to the pollution generated every year by 130000 mid-sized cars. A refrigerator that is more than ten years old uses on average three times as much energy than more recent models and a freezer uses twice as much. A thirty year-old fridge uses more than 4.8 times more energy.
